Pre-cultivated sedum blankets were rolled across the roofs of 53 guest lodges and the Welcome Building at Chester Zoo, delivering a sustainable green-roof solution that blends into the landscape while providing waterproofing, insulation and biodiversity benefits.
The goal was to provide a long-lasting, watertight and environmentally responsible roofing solution that complemented the zoo’s conservation-led design. Each roof needed to perform to the highest technical standards while enhancing the visual and ecological character of the site.
Working within an operational zoo required strict compliance with safety and environmental procedures to protect both staff and wildlife. With more than 50 lodges to complete, the project demanded exceptional coordination to maintain consistent quality and sequencing across multiple areas. Tight timescales also added pressure, as all works had to align with the zoo’s grand opening programme.
